Three weeks into the circuit breaker, our leading instructors have gotten the FaMA community up and going with Zoom classes! Reportedly, some of the classes are tougher than one would think, leaving some of us aching for days.
Meanwhile, we decided to check in on our Assistant Instructors and find out what they have been keeping themselves occupied during the circuit breaker.

The importance of the position of the elbow in an underhook with Professor Roberto Corrêa Gordo
Takeaway - when you have an underhook whilst playing half guard, a lot of the time it is possible to manipulate the weight of the opponent by adjusting the position of the elbow. Elbow up for moving the opponent forward, elbow down to move the weight backwards.

Train for Life: Caio Terra’s BJJ Journey - I watched this motivational video from Caio Terra when I was a white belt. At that point, my understanding of BJJ was very limited and I kept thinking I could only be “somebody” if I was undefeated and had many achievements to show for. To be able to hear this perspective from one of the best practitioners in the world, was life-changing. Caio’s words taught me that sometimes the best moments of growth and humility come from being humbled, knocked down, and when things don’t go our way. Six years on, I’d say that this remains to be one of the most impactful BJJ stories for me and I encourage all BJJ practitioners - whether white or black belts - to take a leaf out of the experience that dear Caio shares with us.
Dangal - This is a Hindi movie about a retired national wrestler (played by Aamir Khan) who decides to train up his daughters to follow in his footsteps. They come from a humble village background so in this context, along with social stigmas that these are girls learning how to do what is normally seen as a “man’s sport”, we get to see the family go through backlash, rejection, and endless challenges. I do love the girl power element of this movie, but what touches me the most is the father’s connection, love, and perseverance for his daughters. Never underestimate what a Father’s love can do for his children!

In The Zone: How Champions Think and Win Big - This is an amazing book for anyone who is interested in the mental attributes of an elite athlete and what makes them great. The book takes a deep dive into the mindset of world champions - from Novak Djokovic to Tony Hawk to Usain Bolt - via a series of exclusive interviews. Whether you are someone who is finding it difficult to train consistently or an elite competitor looking for that mental edge, this book has something for you and I highly recommend it.

Here are a few videos with exercise/drills that are really useful for me during this CB time.
For warming up I like to do these drills from Professor Cobrinha.
After that I also like to add some guard retention exercises to help my mobility and movement.

I keep fit at home by following home workout routines by a Hong Kong celebrity and a mother of one, Coffee Lam. She does various types of workouts from yoga to bodyweight exercises that can be done at home without equipment. She also has simple exercises for mums who have just given birth. I feel that the aim of her exercises are to allow women of all fitness backgrounds to build up their confidence in exercising from the comforts of their own homes.

Brave Heart - This movie always inspires me during challenging situations such as competitions and difficult times.
Factfulness - Every book gives different ideas. It’s a very easy book to read. This one teaches you to keep your assumptions in check and be lead by facts.
